Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I'm passionate about helping lawyers work efficaciously and live a full life.

How many lawyers does it take to change a light bulb?

How many lawyers does it take to change a light bulb?

The answer is eleven.

  1. One to attend the bulb to confirm that the bulb is, in fact, blown;
  2. A second to document the circumstances surrounding the failure of the bulb in order to establish liability;
  3. Another to research and consider the replacement bulb required (and possible alternatives);
  4. One to attend to negotiate the purchase of the replacement bulb and consider the terms and conditions of purchase (including all relevant indemnities and waivers of responsibility);
  5. One to undertake research on the best process to correctly change the bulb and to draft a memo outlining the action required for safe removal, ensuring all Occupational Health and Safety issues are addressed;
  6. One to proofread, and settle the memo;
  7. Another to undertake removal and replacement of the bulb;
  8. One to hold the ladder;
  9. An instructor for the bulb twister and ladder holder;
  10. One to take accurate contemporaneous notes and  to serve as witnesses as to the replacement of the bulb,
  11. One more to write an end of matter review memo documenting the failure of the bulb, the  workflow for purchase of and installation of the replacement bulb for future reference

– which memo is then filed without reference to the Firm's Knowledge Management procedures, and cannot be located next time a bulb blows – necessitating the employment of a further ten lawyers to undertake the entire exercise a second time, without the benefit of the learnings gained from the earlier matter.
