How many lawyers does it take to change a light bulb?
The answer is eleven.
- One to attend the bulb to confirm that the bulb is, in fact, blown;
- A second to document the circumstances surrounding the failure of the bulb in order to establish liability;
- Another to research and consider the replacement bulb required (and possible alternatives);
- One to attend to negotiate the purchase of the replacement bulb and consider the terms and conditions of purchase (including all relevant indemnities and waivers of responsibility);
- One to undertake research on the best process to correctly change the bulb and to draft a memo outlining the action required for safe removal, ensuring all Occupational Health and Safety issues are addressed;
- One to proofread, and settle the memo;
- Another to undertake removal and replacement of the bulb;
- One to hold the ladder;
- An instructor for the bulb twister and ladder holder;
- One to take accurate contemporaneous notes and to serve as witnesses as to the replacement of the bulb,
- One more to write an end of matter review memo documenting the failure of the bulb, the workflow for purchase of and installation of the replacement bulb for future reference
– which memo is then filed without reference to the Firm's Knowledge Management procedures, and cannot be located next time a bulb blows – necessitating the employment of a further ten lawyers to undertake the entire exercise a second time, without the benefit of the learnings gained from the earlier matter.
